Driver Qualification/Equipment Needs
Driver Requirements
  • Be professional in appearance
    We do have a dress code, which will be addressed at orientation.
  • Age Requirement
    Horizon Transport's independent contractor drivers must be at least 25 years of age.
  • CDL Requirement
    Each state may differ regarding what minimum license class you should possess. You must check with your state DMV and let them know that you are desiring to use your truck to deliver recreational vehicles for hire.
  • Acceptable MVR
    Reports will be checked for the previous 3 years. It cannot contain more than 1 moving violation or a total of 4 points. There must be no moving violation suspensions.
    ***A history of Drug-related convictions, DUI, DWI, OWI, careless driving, reckless driving or habitual offender convictions will disqualify an applicant from further consideration. ***
  • Full 10 year work history
    You must document a full 10 year work history on your application. If you have any gap of more than 60 days between jobs or more than 4 work references, you must submit a professional letter of recommendation.
    What is a professional letter?
  • Road Test
    Pass a company road test.
  • Pass a DOT Drug test at Horizon Transport specified facility
    Drug testing must be done in Wakarusa on day 1 of orientation. The current cost is $45.00.
  • Pass a DOT Physical
    May use existing physical if it has been administered within the previous 6 months of your application date. Physical testing can be done locally for $45.00.
  • Phone
    Every driver must have a active cell phone. (Before you come to orientation have an active cell phone and voice mail established.)
  • Plate deposit
    Each contractor will be assigned transporter plates during orientation. The refundable deposit requirement is $50.00 for two plates.
  • Damage Deposit
    Each qualified contractor is required to establish a damage deposit during the orientation period. The damage deposit is $1000. We understand that this can be a hardship for new contractors. Therefore, two options are available.
    1. Personal check, money order or cash.
    2. You may have 10% of each trip deducted until you attain the $1000 level.
    ***In the event that a contractor de-leases, prior to completing 25 loads, a $250 administrative fee will be charged against the deposit. ***

It will be the contractor's responsibility to provide standard Comprehensive and Collision coverage for the truck. The bobtail coverage is in addition to this standard coverage.
Truck
  • You must submit a copy of your vehicle registration
  • Truck model year 2003 and newer
    Horizon requires trucks to be no older than 2003 and no smaller than 3/4 ton. This means you may come aboard with a 2003, or newer, model truck and you may continue to use that truck as long as it is safe, reliable, and presentable.
  • Truck must be owned
    If your truck is under a lease we will not process your application.
  • Truck License Plate
    The truck's license plate must be sufficient to legalize a combination of truck and trailer up to 26,000 lbs. Horizon recommends the equivalent of an Indiana 26,000 lbs truck plate, but NO MORE than 26,000 lbs.

  • Truck must be a full size ¾ or 1 ton (dually not necessary) No mid size trucks or vans
    Horizon Transport will not lease on any truck bed under 8 foot long. Your truck will be measured at orientation and must meet our 8 foot standard length.
  • Must submit a completed DOT inspection
    Inspection can be done at the following location:
           Dan's Service Center- Wakarusa and Elkhart, IN, D&M Automotive or Monteith Tire, Wakarusa, IN
    Note: Before a DOT truck inspection is administered, you must have an emergency triangle kit and a mounted fire extinguisher in your truck.
  • Truck must be equipped with the following:
    1. Class III receiver
            
      Rated at least 10,000 pounds
    2. 5th wheel link to picture of 5th wheel hitch

            Located at rear bumper, as well as mud flaps directly behind the tire

      for your own truck repairs (on the road)

             rating of 125 pounds (to tighten trailer lugs at the beginning of a trip)
             with 3 deep well 6 point socket sizes: 7/8, 13/16, and 3/4

            DOT requires the battery to be a  "wet" cell battery not a dry cell

    Optional Equipment:

      that are 2 inches wide. These are used for securing stacked loads.

Can I use a 4 wheel drive pickup truck?
Yes, as long as the bed rail measures 57" and under, from the ground to the top of the rail.
What if I have a 6 foot bed?
Horizon Transport will not lease on any truck bed under 8 foot long. Your truck will be measured at the orientation and must meet our 8 foot standard length.
Fuel tank in bed of pickup? or any items in bed of pickup?
Any loose items in the bed must be secured for travel. Any items such as a fuel tank, tool box, etc. that may extend over the bed rails are prohibited. The clearance space needed for safe trailer transport operations requires no item to extend above the bed railing
